WOMEN??S DAY

Posted by [email protected] on March 12, 2015 at 5:45 AM

Euphoria of women’s day is finally over on social media. The whole world was abuzz with greetings to the womenfolk. I was amazed at the prodigious variety of complements and messages the womenfolk received. We were appreciated for the versatility in our lives. Our roles as a daughter, wife, mother, sister et all were extolled. Our virtues of patience, sacrifice dedication etc.. were generously praised. A vivid portrayal of beauty too was made.

This day overwhelmed us with all the complements. I was thankful for having been born on this planet; my fellow human beings had been so nice to us.

The day passed, as everything does. The newspapers next day and henceforth have been reporting news which is gory and grim for womenfolk. Gang rapes were reported like a routine affair. A curiosity to watch the monstrous and most heinous act of all times made A video of ‘Nirbhaya’ case go viral. Violation of modesty was being categorized by so called intellects. Many felt and made a strong statement in public that women deserved the violence being committed against them. The’ what’s app’ was again full of silly jokes about women. The posts made mockery of their driving, their inclination for make-up, their predilection for dressing, their attitude, their thought and what not.

Such is our society. We are glorified, lauded and proclaimed for one day and derogated and denigrated for the rest of the 364 days. Do we not belong to this planet as much as the men folk do? Is the rest of the population doing a favour by sharing this place with us? Should we feel obliged for their kindness for one day and brutality for the rest of the days?

Please don’t oblige us with one day glory. Let us live a life, simply a life as a human being.
